Fiji Expedition 2025
Save the Nautilus will be partnering up with Central Campus Marine Science students to continue nautilus surveys in Fiji from March 28 to April 9. Dr. Greg Barord will lead total of 37 students who have been working intensely to prepare themselves for the emotional, physical, and mental toll that any fieldwork has, let alone nautilus surveys. We will continue our collaboration with the Fiji Ministry of Fisheries and University of South Pacific on different aspects of the surveys. The plan is to deploy baited traps, set out baited remote underwater video systems (BRUVS), search for nautilus eggs with a remote operated vehicle (ROV), and collect informative data on the nautilus population within Fiji, such as shell length/width, sex, shell abnormalities, and non-lethal tissue and shell samples. When not on the water, the students will be visiting local schools and organizations to learn from one another about different perspectives of not only nautilus and marine conservation, but their own lives, cultures, and beliefs.
